What May Be Copied?
All materials subject to photocopying must be physically sound, of manageable size and weight, with flexible bindings. If you are unsure about an item, consult with a Reference Librarian before filling out an order form. We will copy :
-
Up to 25% of a book, with a maximum of 100 pages per book.
-
Entire pamphlets of 32 pages or less.
-
Up to 50% of an unbound pamphlet of 33 pages or more, with a maximum of 50 pages.
-
Oral histories produced by the Regional Oral History Office or the Sierra Club History Project.
What May Not Be Copied?
Generally speaking, the following items may not be photocopied :
-
Material available elsewhere in the UC Berkeley Library system.
-
Material which has already been microfilmed. (Reader-printer copies may be made.)
-
Paperbound books or pamphlets which have been perfect-bound (single sheets glued into the spine, rather than sewn signatures).
-
Gaylord-bound items (items taped and stapled into board covers by the library).
-
Items printed before 1750, or with VAULT or TYP as part of the call number. (Exceptions may be made only by the Rare Books Curator, Tony Bliss).
-
Bound pamphlets, especially when the items are of disparate sizes. Bound periodicals are generally acceptable for photocopying.
-
Scrapbooks.
-
Letterpress books.F
-
oldouts of unusual size, fragility or complexity. (Generally, a page that folds out in one direction is acceptable, but pages that fold out in more than one direction cannot be photocopied.)
-
Flat items which exceed 36" in height or width.
-
Photographs. (Exceptions may be made only by the Pictorial Curator, Jack von Euw or the Pictorial Archivist, James Eason ).
How Do I Place An Order?
-
Use a tan order form, available at the Reference Desk. Use one form for each item.
-
Your name and address must appear on every order form, even if you are picking up your photocopies. For mail orders, write out the full shipping address very clearly.
-
Determine whether the item can be photocopied at one or two pages per photocopy :
- If the item opens easily and the print area can easily be contained within the margins of 8.5" x 11" or 8.5" x 14" paper, photocopying will be done at two pages per copy. (We will reduce up to 10% if necessary. Please check the "Reduction O.K." box on the form.)
- If the page size is greater than 9" high, or if a double-page spread exceeds 15", photocopying will be done at one page per copy.
- 11" x 17" paper is available for maps and single-sheet items only.
-
Fill in the complete call number, brief title, the numbers of the pages you want copied, and the TOTAL number of copies ordered. For example: "pp. 13-19 (5 copies)."
-
Submit the item(s) and order form(s) to the Reference Librarian, who will calculate the amount owed. Additional charges or refunds will be handled when the copies are picked up, or by check if the copies are to be mailed.
NOTE : If you are planning an extended research visit, or intend to place a large number of photocopy orders, please check with the Reference Librarian or Duplication Services staff as soon as possible to see if any special arrangements need to be made. This is especially important if you must have copies mailed to you.
