For reference assistance, consult staff at the Reference Desk.
Paging : how to request material :
-
Advance paging via the form online is strongly encouraged. Some types of material cannot be paged in advance.
-
When in the Reading Room, fill out a paging slip for each item you wish to request. Slips are found in the Reading Room and beside the public computer terminals. Each paging slip should be filled out completely, including call number, author, title, today’s date, and seat location. Please print clearly and firmly.
-
Please remember to present your Reader’s card at the Circulation Desk each time you submit paging slips. During busy periods we may limit the number of paging slips accepted.
-
Material shelved off campus is usually available within three business days after the request is made. Items not used within two weeks may be returned to storage.
-
Please return material to the Circulation Desk. Please alert Desk staff for help with fragile or oversize material, or if you need assistance.
-
Items should be placed on “lunch hold” if you leave the Library briefly. Hold slips should be filled out and placed in items you wish to hold for a week or longer. Please consult Circulation Desk staff about holding materials.
Use of material : how to handle items from our collections :
-
Books should not be held open with such items as notebooks, pencils, or other books. Flexible book weights (“snakes”) and bookstands are available at the Circulation Desk.
-
No marks may be made in Bancroft materials; annotations found in Bancroft materials should not be removed.
-
Manuscript and other loose-leaf material require special care; additional time is sometimes needed to circulate them. Please maintain their arrangement. Suspected irregularities in arrangement, etc., should be brought to the attention of staff at the Reference Desk. Vault, manuscript and pictorial materials are circulated one at a time. Limit of three items overall at any one time.
-
DO NOT REMOVE any flags placed in any Bancroft material.
Reproductions : how to order copies :
MICROFILM SCANNERS : The Bancroft Library recently obtained new microfilm scanning machines, capable of producing multi-page pdfs. However, these machines do not print. This new service is free, and patrons are highly encouraged to bring their own flash-drives. But should they forget, 4GB flash drives are sold at the Reference Desk for $7.75.
PHOTOCOPY/MICROFILM : The Bancroft Library’s Photo duplication Service will make photocopies of materials subject to copyright restrictions and concern for the physical preservation of the original. Please consult our Photo duplication Policy leaflet for policy guidelines. Request forms are available at the Circulation Desk. Fill out the order form completely, including signature, and mark the range of pages needed with pink slips. The Reference staff must review ALL photocopy requests. In certain cases (such as bound manuscripts or large orders) microfilming will be required. Prepayment is required for copies that are to be mailed.
PHOTOGRAPHS: Photographs may not be photocopied. Consult the Photographic Services cost sheet for digitization service. Order forms are available at the Reference Desk. Prepayment is required.
